Family Fun Activity: Making Up Stories Together!

My daughter and I have always loved reading together…we still do even though she is now 9 years old!  She’ll be the first to admit though that she sometimes got tired of reading from a book.  When she was about 5 years old, we would sometimes switch out our nightly book with a “Make Your Own Story,” game!

Get started with a traditional storyline.

Parent/Start:  There once was a princess named Sarah who lived in a castle.

Child:  That castle was in a faraway land called Sweetsville.

Parent:  Sweetsville wasn’t so sweet because no candy was allowed.

Child:  What, no candy?  What would princess Sarah do?

I’m sure you can get the point now!  Anyways, this very simple game would often lead to hours and hours of fun with my daughter.  It is amazing how you can start with a princess but end with a bowl of cereal!

It is amazing how much a simple game can lead to a TON of giggles and a very active imagination.

Summer Fun Activity: Backyard Camping!

Fun Family Activity - Backyard Camping

If you are on a limited budget this summer, you might decide to forego the family vacation.  That doesn’t mean you can’t have your own mini stay-cation.  In fact, backyard camping is a fun, family-friendly activity that doesn’t require much time, money or effort!

The Tent

Unless you are opting for under-the-stars, you’ll need a tent to house your family on your backyard adventure.  Good news?  You can purchase from fairly cheap tents from Amazon.com or your local department stores.  Consider them an investment, as proper care can ensure years of backyard adventures!

If you can’t afford the cost of a new tent right now, consider checking Craigslist for any used bargains or ask a friend or family member to borrow a tent.

Sleeping Bags

Sleeping bags are commonly associated with camping, but you can get away with using comforters or plain old blankets when camping in your own backyard!  Just grab the pillows and blankets from your bed and you are good to go.  Of course, give them a good washing when you are done.

Avoid The House

The only downside to backyard camping is that it is easy to find yourself retreating back into the house.  Make it a true adventure by avoiding the house as much as possible.  Opt to store food in a cooler, have plenty of games and snacks handy, and so forth.  Chances are, your children will forget they are camping right in their own backyard.

Cool Product To Checkout: GardenFort Backyard Play Space @ Magic Cabin

One of my favorite websites to leaf around from time to time is Magic Cabin.  Talk about childhood dreams come true!  This online retailer as everything and everything that a little boy or girl could ask for.  One cool product that I instantly fell in love with was the GardenFort Backyard Play Space.  I mean….check this thing out!

According to the Magic Cabin website, the GardenFort measures 58 inches in length, 58 inches in width and 48 inches in height.  It is recommended for ages 3 and up.  Your purchase includes the supporting frame work and three varieties of seeds.

You and your child can plant the seeds around the base of the structure and they’ll grow!  The end result is what you see pictured.  How neat is that?  Imagine your child’s joy, surprise and excitement as their backyard “fort,” or “playspace,” begins to grow around them!

Talk about a perfect addition to your family’s garden!

Girl Scout Trip To Rochester Museum of Play

Strong National Museum of PlayYesterday, we took our Girl Scout troop on a trip to the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY.  Although my troop is a Brownie troop, of 2nd and 3rd graders, I can’t recommend the museum enough for parents of children of all ages…including preschoolers.

In fact, this was our fourth time visiting and all three prior visits were when Sarah was 4 years old or younger.

As I’m sure you can imagine, I am still exhausted after our day-long adventure.  I’ll try and get a review up later this week!
